The Epic Video That Wasn’t – GT-RR R35s x 2

GT-RR R35 GT-R Demo Car Mobil 1 Toyo Tires R888

Back in 2008 I had one of my career highlights of producing two ultimate GT-Rs simultaneously over a short period of time. It was an amazing experience and as I look back on it, I still have the same love for the cars as I did back then (if not more so). I only had these two GT-Rs for a short period of time and after their SEMA debut with Mobil 1 and Toyo Tires the cars were shipped off to opposite sides of the country (Hawaii and New Jersey). Although I’ve amassed a large collection of photos during the builds and at SEMA, sadly I have much less documented of the two cars together.

A video shoot for Streetfire’s television distribution was prepared and that video was going to be my only video documentation of these two beasts together. One afternoon three GT-Rs drove off to do a video shoot by the beach in Los Angeles. The two GT-RR demo cars of the time were joined by Adam from Streetfire’s silver GT-R as a camera car. As we ripped up and down the street getting footage I felt that I’d have something great to look back on to remember these cars by. In a matter of a week after the filming the cars dispersed and there was no more footage ever again of them together.

Much to my disappointment the video never made it out of streetfire’s offices and I’ve never seen it. Sadly, no video exists of Brandon’s midnight purple R35 at all. (a huge mistake on my part)

So I’m left with just a couple of still pictures that I have from the day to reminisce over the video that wasn’t.

As I continue to plan and prepare my latest GT-R project car, I look back at these cars and somehow feel a little intimidated with my current project.

All pictures above are 1800 pix res. The picture below is my favorite of the two cars together but unfortunately this is the best quality I have of it.

So Proud – Mobil 1 GT-R Ad Goes To Print

Mobil 1 GT-RR Bulletproof Automotive Ad R35 GT-R

Its been a year since I made this car for Mobil 1 (and Brandon, the car’s owner in Hawaii). I’m still feeling like the proud father of this baby! A year later and I still love it like it was just built yesterday. My goal was to set out and build a timeless and classic  GT-R with this one (even doing the throwback Midnight Purple II Special GT-R paint). To me a year in, I feel like I succeeded. I’ll check in a year from now and see if it is still aging well.

This Mobil 1 ad is better late than never. They tell me this will be running in pretty much every car magazine for the next few months. Sweet! This is way cooler than the billboard in Vegas of the car.

Brandon – Take good care of this baby…

Man, I need someone to ask me to build them a crazy GT-R…itching to do another BIG project and bring it to Tokyo Auto Salon to kick ass on JDM home turf.

Check the June 2009 issue of Performance Auto and Sound Magazine out when it hits news stands! On the cover is one of the two signature GT-Rs we put together for SEMA for our client Brandon in Hawaii and our main sponsors Mobil 1, Toyo Tires and GT-RR. Other companies involved in the build who deserve a shout out as well include: Endless, Amuse, Manabu Suzuki (MSR), Zele, Cobb, and Signal Auto.

PAS Mag is still doing their thing strong and has some great guys behind it (Mike and Dave in particular come to mind). Thanks guys!

The Mobil 1 GT-R project as documented earlier here on the blog has made the trip back home to Hawaii into the hands of it’s owner Brandon. Brandon recently shared some pictures of his GT-R back in Hawaii. I thought you all might like to see the pics, so…

More Press For the GT-RR SEMA Demo Cars

Posted by

Good press is always welcomed! One of the car’s sponsors, Mobil 1, sent me scans of the latest SEMA news magazine. It turns out it is also online:

http://sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?id=61163

SEMA used this article to share their choices for the industry’s most influential 14 cars that were at SEMA Las Vegas 2008. Our white GT-R was selected as the only Japanese car in the list!

The First To Do A Purple R35 GT-R – Mobil 1 GT-R

Posted by

I’m very proud to write this post. A while ago I had this idea in my head that I wanted to build a Midnight Purple R35 GT-R for the SEMA show. At the time (and for many people, all the way up until they saw the car) most people thought I was crazy. Fortunately Mobil 1 understood and also my client Brandon who owns the Mobil 1 car understood. They gave me a chance to do what I wanted to do, and I’m very grateful for it.

The goal of the car was to beat Nissan on the punch on their SpecV and to build a timeless car for my client Brandon and my sponsor Mobil 1. Now looking back we can see the cars side by side and see if I succeeded:

This is the new Nissan SpecV

SpecV

And this is the car I designed many months earlier, before it was announced that the SpecV would have purple special paint and before the final specs came out:

So lets see how my custom GT-R did looking back after the fact when compared to the new SpecV from Nissan

1. SpecV has authentic purple paint from Nissan – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 demo car air freighted in from Japan.

2. SpecV has a titanium exhaust – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 demo car, plus we have titanium high flow cats as well for more weight reduction.

3. SpecV has a dry carbon wing – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 demo car with even more downforce

4. SpecV has brake ducting – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 demo car with Zele front bumper (not quite the same, but I’m counting it anyways)

5. SpecV has a carbon fiber front grill – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 car

6. SpecV has upgraded brakes for racing use – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 car (although Endless Mono vs carbon ceramic so we take a bit of a loss there)

7. SpecV has more power – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 (actually Mobil 1 puts out much more power than SpecV)

8. SpecV has carbon reclining sports seats – CHECK, so does Mobil 1 (although ours are carbon/kevlar backed Bride reclining seats rather than SpecV Recaros)

Plus as a bonus we have a color matched/burned Amuse exhaust and more carbon fiber parts including a carbon roof as well as side skirts, rear under spoiler, fender outlet ducts and more:

Overall I think we did a pretty good job of beating Nissan to the punch despite going into it blind on a lot of things…sure I had a hunch that Nissan would bring back their legendary Purple again, but with no spec list or information on the SpecV I’m pretty impressed with how well we nailed it.

So when I debuted the car on TheRealJDM blog, many of the blog readers here asked me to show you pictures of the car before the graphics got applied. I wanted to hold back on those until a moment like now when we could compare it in more OEM appearance to the SpecV. Now’s a great time to see the Mobil 1 car without the BBS LMs and without the MS-R / Mana-P graphics.

I’m ready to take on more projects for 2009 so if anyone wants me to build them a custom car, I’m just about ready to start another project!

Also to all media – We have two different professional photo shoots on this Mobil 1 car that we can offer, we’re currently taking offers for magazine covers. If you’re interested please contact ben@bulletproofautomotive.com
