The 2012 GT-R: A Tuner’s Perspective by Kristoffer Friberg

2012 GT-R Black and Blue

Today ended up being a major day for GT-R fans worldwide as a comprehensive amount of new information went public about the refreshed 2012 GT-R.  Since everybody’s probably already seen all the nitty-gritty details, and I’m going to be discussing the car from an aftermarket perspective, I’ll just give a basic recap… Some of the predicted improvements include upgraded suspension, brakes, overall fit and finish, and of course more power.  However, perhaps the biggest highlights were the ones that came as a complete surprise, like the new, even lighter-weight Rays wheels (saving over 6lbs total unsprung weight) and the amazing, new 2WD mode that allows the GT-R to finally be driven in full RWD (can anybody say, ‘drifting’)!!

2012 R35 GT-R Nordschliefe

For the last year or so, many people were speculating that Nissan would only do minor updates to the exterior of the car; with the changes merely evolving the look, but not improving it much.  However, I personally was surprised to see that the changes the front fascia alone have drastically improved the look of the car (giving it a little more class in the process).  The rear under spoiler has been completely changed as well, with added side vents and a center diffuser that features an F1-style LED lamp.

From a tuning perspective, I think this new GT-R will have a big influence on current R35 owners.  From the reactions I’ve seen so far, it seems like the new exterior parts, carbon interior pieces, improved suspension and ultra light-weight wheels are all desirable upgrades.  Being in the aftermarket industry, I’m personally wondering just how many of the the newer parts will be a straight swap with 2008-11 GT-Rs. For example, while wheels are an obviously easy swap, retrofitting the new RWD only computer settings may prove to be a much more involved job.

Undoubtedly it will be interesting to see people start “upgrading/tuning” their first generation R35 GT-Rs with the some of the newer OEM parts (just like owners in the past have done with S13 and S14 Silvias, R32 and R33 GT-Rs, FD RX-7s, and Toyota Supras).  Conversely, it’ll also be interesting to see how creative owners can get with modifying the new GT-R, and how the car can be improved with already existing aftermarket parts (and which parts are compatible).

There’s always room for improvement over stock; which can even be said of Nissan’s “OEM perfect” SpecV GT-R (I’ve seen it already firsthand, as several of our customers have even gone as far as doing full motor builds on these ultra-rare toys).  With that said, I’m excited to see what kind of tuning potential this updated GT-R has when it finally goes on sale next Spring!

Credit goes to GT-R Blog for the tech info on the car.

The Find – Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune For Sale!

Nismo Z-Tune R34 GT-R For Sale by GT-RR.COM

I just returned from my most recent trip to Japan. During these trips I’m often lucky enough to find some really cool stuff because of my network of friends out there in the industry. Usually its new parts and inside news, but this time it was something far different… I was shocked to find a friend of mine who asked for my assistance in selling a very VERY rare BNR34 GT-R Z-Tune by Nismo. This is an authentic Nismo produced car (only 19 were ever made). The car (as expected) is an extremely special collectors car which is unlikely to ever depreciate in value due to the historical significance and legendary status amongst GT-R enthusiasts (plus only 19 exist and no more will ever be produced). Not to mention is runs like a monster on crack for those lucky enough to take it to the streets or circuit.

I took some pictures of the car when I got a chance to see it in the flesh. It was a really special moment to get up close and personal with this rare piece of JDM GT-R history. I’ve seen these cars in the past at events but usually they were roped off and inaccessible. Checking out the custom bits that cant be bought was a special moment for me. Things like the carbon fiber reinforced chassis points and the insanely over-engineered titanium Z-Tune SPL strut tower bar were the little joys in life that remind me how much I love my job!

I’ve added the car to GT-RR.COM’s website and it can be found here:

For those fortunate enough to ask the scary question of how much it costs, please email us at

For the rest of us, more car porn (pictures of this beast) can be found at the link above and a couple of extra pics below.

GT-RR Gets Online Ordering System

Posted by

Sometimes we all drive ourselves crazy trying to be perfectionists, GT-RR.COM is a good example. We were not content with just using a yahoo store or some prepackaged solution, instead we wanted something bespoke (since we’re all about custom solutions over mass produced public consumption goods). So we set out to build a fully one-off solution, building a database and website framework from scratch to try to make it the best it could possibly be.

GT-RR is now nearly a year old and yet despite steady updates and improvements, we still display that it is in BETA mode on the website. We’re very happy with the website and the feedback has been great over the past year, but it is not yet where we envisioned it would be so the BETA remains displayed. We want perfection.

One big piece of the puzzle was just completed however, we finally launched our e-commerce. The big missing piece of being able to order online is now complete. For all the GT-R owners out there, I’m proud to introduce our new and improved GT-RR with online ordering now available!

First off, I need to share one of the goodies I just air freighted in from Japan. This is from Nismo Japan…It is a LED light up key chain of the R35 GT-R Super GT Car. It also is one of those wind up toys that shoots forward. All in all, a very cool and actually useful toy for GT-R lovers… nismo led key chain gt-r

As a perk to new clients of GT-RR.COM, we’re giving some of these away to anyone who places a new order and mentions it. Also we have a few for sale at Bulletproof Automotive for quick e-commerce purchase:

Secondly, I wanted to follow up a point I made earlier about the unprecedented spending we’re doing to continue to aggressively order and stock GT-R parts. When we do our job right (product selection and promotion), most of our stocking orders still sell before the ocean freight containers land…but still we have some incredible parts in stock (and/or incoming on shipment) right now for the GT-R. For Immediate Release:
Nissan R35 GT-R Coilover Sleeve System

Salt Lake City, Utah, September, 2008 – COBB Tuning is proud to announce the release of the all new Coilover Sleeve System for the Nissan R35 GT-R.

COBB Tuning’s new Coilover Sleeve System gives you the ability to customize the ride height of your Nissan GT-R while retaining the factory adjustable shock absorbers. Suspension movement has also been enhanced by replacing the stock rubber bushings with teflon-lined FK spherical-bearing top mounts that allow for full articulation of the suspension while maintaining linear spring movement.

Handling is dramatically improved by utilizing 700lb/ in front springs and a 600lb/in rear spring and helper spring combination to keep the rear spring seated through the full range of motion. Custom spring rates are also available.

Gold anodized aluminum spring perches were designed to facilitate easy installation and adjustment with the use of the included black zinc-plated, hardened-chromoly steel 3-in-1 tool. The custom designed tool is used to change ride height, install upper perches, and to lock lower perches in place. Black anodized aluminum threaded mounts, stainless steel spacers and bump stops complete the system.
