Wagon Showcase by John Babbitt

Posted by

Before crossovers, before SUV’s, there were wagons. The concept is simple. Take a sedan, add more rear cargo room and call it a day. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been an especially great variety of shooting brakes available to us here in the states. But with makers like Cadillac and Acura introducing some really cool wagons as of late, there might still be hope.

But wagon tuning isn’t just limited to newer models. There already exists an untapped market full of potential. Anything from Volvos to Subarus, Chevys to Benzs, there is a wagon to suit anyone’s taste. All it takes, as with any build, is some imagination. Like this Caprice meets Celsior collabo.

As a plus, wagon tuning parts are readily available, due to their popularity overseas. So it’s time to drop the stereo types and consider wagons as serious tuning platforms. Here are a few more real swagger wagons. Enjoy!- Jbab

A Favorite Levin of Mine by Ben Schaffer

Asayan's AE86 Levin Looking

There’s not a lot that I can say about this car that has not already been said online. I must say that after looking at Dino’s recent coverage of Nagoya’s Exciting Car Showdown, it solidified Asayan’s “Looking” AE86 Levin as one of my favorite AE86s of all time. This car is perfect to me. It also happens to be one of those cars that proves why everyone has been so excited about the old school style Hayashi Street wheels. This 86 wears them perfectly! The flawless engine bay is miraculously matched to the perfect exterior. Nowhere does this car disappoint, even down to its gritty use drifting as seen in the following blogs:

Props to Dino and Speed Hunters for reminding me of this amazing car. I wish I had seen this in the flesh.

Not Another FT-86 Post

Posted by

I did not want to write a blog post about the FT-86 Toyota. I really try to not blog about things everyone else has already molested to death. So instead of telling you how awesome it will be if this car actually comes out, or how a FR platform Toyota with a boxer engine is just what this industry needs to bring enthusiasts back in droves, I’m going to talk about a DVD player…and zippers.

Yes that’s right. You want to read about the car, check out the 1000 other blogs who are all saying basically the same thing. I’m talking about the DVD player.

Why? Because nobody else is.

So take a look at this and tell me if you’ve ever seen it before. It is such an original idea, yet it is simple and somewhat old school. These are the fun touches that make concept cars so cool if they are given the right amount of attention. We’re looking at a DVD player integrated into the dash with a leather cover and a zipper used to accept/block inserting DVDs. Plus the leather is touch sensitive on top of it (well presumably the buttons are underneath the thin skin, but same difference). Although I doubt this will ever make production, it just gets me excited to see something new.

Lets check out a couple of other cool details:

Is that not the coolest shift boot/knob combo you’ve ever seen? Its crazy! I love these little details on this car, creativity to the max. And the seats? C’mon man…Toyota’s concept designers are killing it with this car. I love it. None of this will ever make it to production, but the inspiration lives on.

Props to Autoblog.com for the pics.

Happy 8-6 day! Our contribution is the above picture which is available in wallpaper for both standard and widescreen monitors courtesy of the Nori Yaro blog. This blog is chock full of JDM goodness including a feature of the car above and Garage SunRise, a shop filled with the most amazing collection of AE86 parts I’ve ever seen. Enjoy!

TIOS – A Challenge to Our Little Blog Community

Posted by

Alright, here’s the challenge…lets see what, if anything you can dig up on a company called TIOS.

TIOS is the coolest story you’ve probably never heard. Let me tell you what I know…

When I started getting really hooked on Japanese tuning culture in the mid/late 90s, I used to always read Option Magazine. In option magazine there was the coolest company ever…or so I felt at the time. The company was called TIOS and it is comprised of Tsuchiya, Iida, Orido and Suga.

Anyway, what makes it a really cool story is that Tios was a factory tuned car company. They offered a few cars, the EG Civic hatch, the Silvia (S13 perhaps), R32 GT-R and the AE86. Each car was sold as a rebuild used car, complete with the Tios tuning package. In essence they were aftermarket cars, tuning menu selected by racing legends, certified and sold complete by this company Tios. They even had a turbo EG as one of the cars if I recall. The option magazine ad has a picture of the three guys standing there. There is another Option magazine I have with reviews on the AE86 and EG and driving tests.

More than 10 years later, I still find the Tios concept fascinating. Legitimate and officially backed pre-tuned cars sold as packages.

Surely the internet has something out there…I dont want to dig up old option magazines and scan the pages.

Lets see what the internet can come up with…this community seems to always know where to find this type of rare stuff!

Here’s a start:
